Pissouri Villas for Rent: traditional Cypriot village atmosphere in modern villas overlooking the birthplace of Aphrodite!

Villa holidays in Pissouri combine some of the best elements of a superb villa holiday in Cyprus, including the whitewashed village and restored village square, a Blue Flag beach, easy access to two golf courses and a location slap in the middle of the best vineyards in Cyprus! Pissouri village lies equidistant between Paphos and Limassol, and with easy access to the main motorway, it's just a 15 min drive to Paphos Airport.

The centre of life in Pissouri village, perched some 600 feet above sea level, is the village square with a blue-tiled fountain, white stone shops with traditional wooden shutters. In Pissouri Square, locals, British service personnel from the nearby base, and tourists alike enjoy the sunshine or dine under the stars at taverna tables that spread right across the square area. Here too are friendly small bars, traditional coffee shops where the Cypriot men talk and set the world to rights, and two banks. Stock up on provisions for your Pissouri holiday villa at the village supermarket, and get into town early for delicious freshly baked bread from the bakery.

Above the square, steps lead to the church of Apostle Andreas (St Andrews) with hints of Gothic architecture, and whose original 1000kg bell could be heard up to 15kms away.

Entertainment in Pissouri centres on the new amphitheatre, built in 2000 and echoing the ancient amphitheatres found in the area. You can enjoy shows, open air films and musical performances by British Forces bands under the stars during the summer months, and the backdrop is superb, as the sun sets over Akrotiri Bay beyond. However, during the summer make sure you join in the "Cyprus nights" at the village square, as popular with locals as with visitors.

Pissouri Beach nestles in a sheltered bay, just 3kms from the village centre and reached by a road that winds amongst the vineyards. For pure sand, turn left along this 1km beach beach; if you want some pebbles mixed in, turn right. Active types can enjoy watersports at Pissouri Beach including sailing, snorkling, wind-surfing, waterskiing, jet skis and everyone's favourite, banana boat rides.

Pissouri Beach is almost a village in itself, with restaurants, bars, shops, tavernas and two banks. Enjoy Cypriot meze at The Vine Leaf, a relaxed lunch at Kastro's or a snack at the Captain's Bay restaurant right on the sands. The Limanaki restaurant is a 'must visit', as owner and executive chef Sam Kazzaz trained in France and holds two EuroChef stars. Make sure you book!

For a change of beach, try Avdimou Beach just down the road, which is rarely busy and where the shallows are prefect for children to paddle in.

While most of the vineyards grow grapes for eating rather than wine, stock up on wine at the Pissouri shops to enjoy a glass or six of Anely's Organic Wine (made locally) beside your Pissouri villa swimming pool. If your villa holiday includes a Sunday, don't bother cooking and book for the Sunday carvery at the Hillside restaurant, or try the Cypriot dishes at the very popular Bunch of Grapes Inn.

Pissouri lies just a small distance from one of the most romantic places in Cyprus, Petra tou Romiou, where the goddess of love Aphrodite arrived on shore, according to legend. You'll always find some golf widows and children here, enjoying the sunshine while their partners enjoy 9 or 18 holes at the stunning setting of the 18 hole golf course at Aphrodite Hills, the golf course at Secret Valley or the Tsada Golf Club!
